Early Onset Muscle Weakness Syndrome (MW) in the Holstein cow causes a form of neonatal recumbency, a condition in which a newly-born animal is unable to rise to its feet. The condition may also be known as Calf Recumbency. It is caused by a recessive mutation to the gene CACNA1S.

Clinical Features

The main symptom of the disorder in affected calves is recumbency: general weakness and an inability to stand without assistance. The condition is variable, with some calves entirely unable to stand after birth, and others initially able to stand, but growing weaker within the first six weeks of life. While some calves may recover, many do not, and euthanasia on humane or management grounds may be considered.
