R230 Pool Exam Parentage – Cattle (SNP)

This product includes parentage analysis and DNA profiling of the offspring. The DNA profile of the offspring is compared with a pool of potential parents to identify the most likely dam and/or sire. If DNA profiles of the potential parents are not yet available, separate DNA profiles need to be ordered.

A DNA profile is established using genetic markers and is unique to each individual. The genetic information of the offspring is compared with the DNA profiles of all individuals included in the parent pool. Based on this comparison, potential parents can be excluded or identified as compatible with the offspring.

For assignment of parentage, the genetic information of the offspring must be consistent with that of the identified parent(s). The reliability of the analysis depends on factors such as the number of genetic markers used, the number and relatedness of individuals in the parent pool, and whether DNA profiles of both potential dams and sires are available.

Two types of markers are available for DNA profiling and parentage analysis: STR (microsatellite) markers and SNP markers. These marker types are based on different technologies, and their results are not interchangeable.
