Bovine Citrullinemia (BC) is a disorder in the urea cycle that occurs in Holstein cattle. The disorder, caused by a recessive mutation to the gene ASS1, leads to a disruption in the urea cycle and causes a build up of ammonia and other toxic compounds in the blood, resulting in severe neurological symptoms and ultimately death in affected calves.
