Bovine Citrullinemia (BC) is a disorder in the urea cycle that occurs in Holstein cattle. The disorder, caused by a recessive mutation to the gene ASS1, leads to a disruption in the urea cycle and causes a build up of ammonia and other toxic compounds in the blood, resulting in severe neurological symptoms and ultimately death in affected calves.

Clinical Features
Affected calves present with signs of citrullinemia within the first few days after birth. Symptoms include depression, recumbency (inability to rise from a lying position), tremors, seizures, apparent blindness. Coma and death will rapidly follow.
