Brachyspina, or shortened spine, is a rare genetic defect found Holstein dairy cattle. This disorder has contributed to the decrease in the fertility of Holstein cattle over the past few decades.
The disorder is caused by a recessive mutation to the gene FANCI.

Clinical Features
Affected cattle are show reduced body weight, growth retardation, shortening of the spine and abnormal limbs. Calves develop uneven alignment of the upper and lower teeth, and inner organs (especially the heart, kidneys and gonads) are also affected.
