In Landrace pigs, different mutations are known to lead to embryonic lethality or spontaneous abortion. One of these mutations occur in the URB1 (ribosome biogenesis 1 homolog) gene, which is involved in cellular housekeeping functions essential for embryonic development.

The autosomal recessive semi-lethal loss-of function mutation in the URB1 gene (LA2) is reported to cause embryonic lethality or abortion in Landrace pigs. This mutation leads to a reduction in the number of liveborn offspring.
