Maedi-Visna (MVV) is a disease in sheep caused by a lentivirus. It leads to gradual weight loss, often combined with lung and udder problems, as well as joint and neurological symptoms. Affected sheep usually die from the disease.
Royal GD has developed a certification program for flocks that are free from Maedi-Visna. In collaboration with Royal GD colleagues, a new DNA test is now available to determine the genetic susceptibility of sheep to this disease. The test identifies whether a sheep carries favorable genes, is heterozygous (carrier), or has unfavorable genes (susceptible). While a favorable result does not guarantee complete resistance, the test enables breeders to select for sheep with a lower risk of developing Maedi-Visna. The DNA test can be performed using a cheek swab or a blood sample.
